?Goin Native Garden Workshop has metamorphosed into a Non profit Goin Native Therapeutic Gardens, thanks to impart , to the Capistrano Unified School District Adult Transition "Workability" Program.
Knowing the health benefits that gardening has to offer, the therapeutic gardening idea came about when working with the City of San Juan Capistrano's 111 Marines last May in the Los Rios Park.
One marine named Derek, spent several hours with garden volunteers transforming a bare garden into a lovely cactus garden. To our amazement we were told a few days later that after the day in gardening,
the marine was able to sleep through the night without night terrors from PTSD.
The seed was planted. Fast forward a few months later when Teresa from the Adult Transition Program approached us about working with her adult students in the garden to learn workability skills and get exercise.
After three months the results have been positive. The District Site Psychologist has recommended more schools & students to join our program.
The students are learning new skills and their behavior in the classroom is calmer after an hour in the classroom.Come by for a visit on any given Thursday morning you will see the Los Rios Park buzzing with volunteers , teachers and students,
raking, sweeping, planting, watering and having fun. We're looking for more groups to join our efforts at the park as we continue to grow our butterfly habitat gardens while helping people & plants thrive.
Now that's a true win - win.
